Human resources professionals play a pivotal role in establishing a company’s culture. Not only by implementing policies and practices that reflect the organization’s core values but also through strategic recruitment, employee engagement programs, and fostering a supportive work environment. HR sets the foundational tone that influences the overall workplace atmosphere.

Just like a well-running car requires frequent tune-ups, HR practices need a refresh and tune-up every now and then to keep the company headed in the right direction. A refresh can be as simple as updating employee records or as extensive as updating maternity policies. The key is to evaluate what is working, what is not, and what can be better. Pinion HR advisors have outlined five simple tips that can make a big difference in your workplace and your culture.

5 tips for refreshing your HR practices

  1. Update and purge employee records, including:
  • Employee Classifications
  • I-9 Forms
  • Addresses, phone numbers, and emergency contact information
  1. Perform a policy check. Make sure your policies and employee handbook are up to date. Updating and reviewing policies is crucial to the success of any company, as it ensures they’re acting in alignment with workplace compliance.
  2. Update your handbook. If your handbook has not been updated since 1995 (or even 2016), now is the time. After you’ve done your updates, spend the money on a legal review to make sure that your handbook is up to date with all of the law changes, particularly around discrimination, harassment, and leave policies.
  3. Refresh your rewards and recognition systems. While you are staying on top of policies, don’t forget to keep track of the fun stuff as well! Supporting the company culture is just as important, so be sure you are on top of celebratory events like work anniversaries and birthdays. Here are some ideas to support a healthy company culture:
  • Revitalize employee engagement initiatives
  • Refresh training and development programs
  • Conduct employee feedback surveys
  • Promote work-life balance initiatives
  • Ensure that all remote workers and hybrid workers are properly supported
  1. Tidy up. Dive into those cluttered areas that have been overlooked and sort through those stacks of documents, reorganize your filing system; and even wipe down your area. A well-organized and clean environment is key to a productive and positive atmosphere.
